The
South Coast Beat Scene of the 1960s relives the excitement and energy
of those now far-off years of the early Sixties, when unbridled enthusiasm
for popular music united a whole generation of British teenagers.
Across the country, literally thousands of beat groups were formed,
as youngsters committed themselves enthusiastically to making their
own music. The South Coast of England was no exception. The youth
clubs and church halls of Sussex rattled to the sound of drums and
guitars as hundreds of would-be pop stars rehearsed acts that would
later be heard in coffee-bars, pubs, hotels and clubs by young fans
eager to urge their local groups on to big-time success.
The
story of these young South Coast musicians and the vibrant music
scene they created is recorded here for the first time. Some did
indeed become phenomenally successful, others built strong local
followings and continue to play to this day; many more quit music
over the years and went on to pursue other careers. What unites
them, however, is their nostalgia for this unique era and for the
music that gave them all so much pleasure.
Theyre
all here
from the Aardvarks to the Zabres via the Untamed,
Mike Stuart Span, the Beat Merchants, the Detours, the Diamonds,
the Pathfinders, Deke Arlon and the Tremors, the Giants, the Chimes,
the T-Bones, Micky and the Sapphires, Steamhammer, the Southbeats,
the Web
and dozens more. Their stories are illustrated with
hundreds of atmospheric photographs, posters and cuttings that will
bring many happy memories flooding back. Also featured are the stories
of some of the Souths popular beat music venues, in particular,
the Shoreline in Bognor Regis, the Mexican Hat in Worthing and the
Top Hat in Littlehampton.
